Straight onto Music stuff. Randy Renaud of CHOM (97.7FM) played “Indigo Heat” on his show last Sunday, Black Cat Alley. The next day, I get an email from him saying that the song has received quite a bit of attention from the listeners.  He even copied me on some of their messages.  Randy claims that it was the hit of the show. Allow me to share some of the comments, apparently there were more:

Who is this woman?  Loved that song.  Please play it more often.”

-Tim

“Last night during your show, Black Cat Alley, you played a female artist.  I've never heard of her before.  Caroline Fay?  What a smokey voice she has!  What was that song? Where is she from? Can you play more of her tunes?”

-Alain

“Yesterday I heard Peter Grant's guitar licks on your show.  I've seen Peter play in a few tribute bands, Beatles and most recently a Pink Floyd band.  He is a great player. But who was that woman singing?! She had quite an amazing voice!”

-Vince

What more can I ask for?  It certainly helps with getting the gigs booked. It also helps with finding bookers.  As a matter of fact, I’ve organized a private mini-showcase for a few good industry folks who have shown interest in my stuff.  I am crossing my fingers…Then there’s the continued support from the good folks at Mohawk Radio, RadioRockCafe and Planète Jazz who’ve placed my songs on their rotation play list.  I am very grateful.

So aside from CD Baby, the EP is now available at Archambault Musique’s fine stores (not online, although I've been told that someone emailed the customer service online and they got their copy). You’ll have to ask for it in the Blues section, “Carolyn Fe, 100%”, if they don’t have it in stock, tell them that the store on Ste. Catherine & Berri has them and they’ll make the transfer.

Onto Theatre stuff. Death and the Maiden.  *sigh*  Now that it’s been announced officially and that it has been public knowledge for awhile, I can say that the Centaur Theatre is also staging the play in November of this year.  It will be directed by Gordon McCall.  When Roy Surette, Artistic Director of the Centaur announced their season, my voice mails and emails became a never ending loop of messages from people who were calling me to break “the” news and was most probably more curious to see how I would react.

Pfffff…Let me tell you something. Mr. Surette is a real gentleman.  He contacted me months and months ago to let me know what he was planning for his season.  So to all those who thought they were breaking some kind of news to me…relax, “the” news is old news to me.

It was so gracious and thoughtful of him to ask me how I felt about having Death and the Maiden in his season.  I mean, think about it…who is Altera Vitae Productions compared to the Centaur? In any case, what he did was worthy of the title, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR.  I honor he who can come down from the establishment to acknowledge a small independent theatre company that is trying to survive. Mr. Surette is a class act and I believe that he really believes in the survival of theatre not only in Montreal but everywhere.  I think this man will be (if not already) a key figure in reviving theatrical interest in the Montreal general public…and of course, because of his unselfishness, us local indie theatres will reap some of the benefits. Just look at his current season - which is about to end. It is/was a series of down to earth plays that really touches upon todays issues & challenges in a language that anybody can connect to.  Don't get me wrong, I am not slagging the classics but I think the general public has been inondated with it. His upcoming season is sure to bring out the theatre lover in folks of all ages.

Oh! Did I mention that our production of Death and the Maiden will be sponsoring an organization called "RIVO"?  Well we are. RIVO is an intervention network for persons having been subjected to organised violence. I am proud to say that we, Altera Vitae, has created a corporate logo for them as well as through this production, we will be able to design a website that better represents their services.

Gotta go for now….my script is calling me to memorize its lines.  Do check out my Shows/Gigs page and I'd really like to see you in the audience.

The EP is doing really really well.  I am extremely happy at what has been going on.  I am actually getting airplay on the radio.  Both online stations and local radio stations (community and commercial stations) have put my songs on their rotation lists.  I’ve heard my song “Trumpet Man Blues” play on  Planete Jazz which is 91.9FM and Mohawk Radio, an online radio station, plays “The Curse” and “Trumpet Man Blues” quite often.  They guys at Mohawk Radio are quite supportive and really sell my songs.  I am so honored!  I’ve even received requests from Argentina and Portugal stations to send them my EP so it can get some airplay!  EP sales are pretty good too.  CD Baby tells me that folks in Luxembourg have purchased CDs as well. How is that for a WOW factor?!

I am getting ready and looking forward to playing a couple of gigs soon.  We have one coming up in May.  I’ll post it up as soon as I get the specific dates.  This time around, I’ll be backed up by a full band.  We are going to be rehearsing really soon and I know it’s going to feel really good. I continue to work on new songs as I’ve received some very inspiring music from Dan.  It’s so easy and freeing to work with him.  There are no barriers. All we do is talk about a vibe of a song and voila! There it is.

I was recently interviewed on CKUT 90.3FM (McGill U’s station).  I thought I was only going to be there for 15 minutes but to my surprise, they gave me the whole hour.  YAY to QueerCorps on CKUT!  I promise to be your community’s Diva!  I’ll be posting the interview online shortly so you can partake of the happenings.

Rehearsals for Death and the Maiden are still rolling along.  Memorizing lines, studying the character, becoming the character – the whole process is working, albeit not as fast as I want it to.  But I’ll get there.  I know I will.  I have no choice.

So in the meantime, as I stuff my mind with the wonderful writing of Mr. Ariel Dorfman ask for my song on the request lines of Planete Jazz, Mohawk Radio and your local online and air stations or even better, a little support by purchasing it online would certainly be appreciated. Here's where you can get it:  CD Baby...Soon you'll also be able to get it at Archambault Musique's fine stores.

It’s already February and I’m still wishing everybody a Happy New Year!  Dang!  It’s even past Chinese New Year now.  What can I say…my head hasn’t been buried in the sand; it’s been going at 200 mph brewing things up. Here’s the scoop!

Music:  My EP is done, ready and being shopped.  It’s been sent to various radio stations, promoters, bookers, labels & festivals.  I’ve been getting good feedback.  To my surprise, I’ve gotten airplay already!  I’m even booked for a couple of radio interviews! Am I happy or am I HAPPY!!!  This even before an official launch!  Ohhhh but, I do have a gig coming up at Grumpy’s Bar (1242 Bishop, Montreal) on February 23rd at 9:30 pm.  I will see you there, right?! It’s part of their Chick Pickin’ Monday series, hosted none other than the goddess, Cecile Doo-Kingue.  I’ll be ‘leaking’ out a couple of tunes from the EP – lite versions of them though ‘cause the set up is more unplugged or semi-unplugged.  I’m saving myself for the full band extravaganza that will be at the launch.  Hang in there…it’s coming, it’s coming!!!

Acting:  Moving on…I continue to audition and continue to cross my fingers and hope to get the role I auditioned for.  Such is life. Rehearsals are about to start for Death and the Maiden!  We’re putting that up in May. This time, I’m acting in my own production!  Lines…memorizing lines…how much fun is that?  I think it’s the only part of the whole acting process that I am not too fond of.  Also, I’m already prepping for the next production in Fall. OH! OH! OH!  Something neat really happened to the poster from our production of Almost Blue. Someone up there in the Quebec government deemed it good enough to be part of the National Archives!!!  What a surprise that was when I received the official letter from the government! Here's the poster:

Almost Blue

So that’s it for now, gotta go an memorise some lines.  See you soon!

Where did 2008 go?  I can’t believe it’s almost over.  Looking back, it’s been a good artistic year for me, quite busy:  Producing 2 plays, an honorable mention at the MECCAS, acting in a couple of movies & plays, a CBC Voice Over, coming out solo with my music and a Blues CD in the works.

We held general auditions for the theatre company and were quite pleased with the turnout.  Lots of talented people out there!  We were in the audition room for three days starting at 11am and finishing at 6pm, every 15 minutes we met so many good people that it’s going to be quite difficult to cast for the upcoming season.

All in all, I am quite happy with the efforts I’ve put into my projects.  There is still a lot to learn about the industry.  Every new project brings about a new learning experience.  I look forward to what I can dig up in 2009 and what the New Year has to offer. I look forward to getting my Blues CD done and gig away with it.  I also look forward to getting back onstage as an actress, this time in my own production.

So many things to look forward to...But for now, I am a bit tired. This feeling of stopping to rest is somewhat foreign but I am actually looking forward to slowing things down over the holidays to re-energize.  See you next year!

Well, opening night has come and gone.  We are now in marathon mode for the play’s run.  So far we are having good houses…3/4 full and this is just the first week.  If that is an indication of how Almost Blue will go, I will be a really happy producer! I was worried about how the public will react to my directorship.  So far so good and that makes me just a bit more relaxed.  The actors have really made it their own show now.  My stage manager is running the whole thing.  I am now wearing the hat of a technician – charging the glow tapes, making sure the props are in order, doing the preset. I've posted a mini video on the Video/Theatre section of this site.  Hopefully I'll be able to post some pictures soon.

General auditions for my theatre company is now in its preparations stages.  QDF emailed the notice to its members & I created an event on Facebook.  Alot of folks have already sent in their resumes and applications. Call it a habit (because I conduct job interviews in my day job), I consider auditions like a job interview and I do get a bit turned off when applicants do not do their research on the company they are applying to.  Thank goodness I'm not the only one on the panel.
